King Sombra is a former tyrant ruler of the Crystal Empire who lives in King Sombra's Castle in Canterlot and in the Crystal Empire. He was originally added for every player in the Everfree Forest update as the game's 2nd anniversary gift. Players can now obtain King Sombra in two places: in Canterlot by completing the Mane Six collection, and in the Crystal Empire by completing the Crystal Empire Quests.
Similar to Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, King Sombra will occasionally do a unique animation and generate one of each of the Element Shards. He also shares royal sisters' arrival animation (flying on his own instead of hot air balloon) though he doesn't have wings.
Like Princess Cadence, he starts with five stars, but cannot participate in the Magic Wings and the Minecart minigames.
